I patched the thumbnail bug. Unless someone proves otherwise! Also made some google ad changes to the search. I’m not sure if it is going to stay that way or not.

Today we rolled out the newest feature for paid ads, thumbnails. Now on searches and category listings you can have a thumbnail instead of the traditional *pic* marker. To accomplish this, you need only submit a picture with your ad, and choose some paid enhancement. It doesn’t matter which one, bold for 75 cents, highlighted for $1, or a featured ad for $10 will all score you a thumbnail.

You must upload an image with your ad to get the thumbnail. Remotely hosted images do not trigger a thumbnail. Currently there is a bug where if you change the image via editting the ad, the thumbnail will default back to *pic*.

In other news…. I posted an ad for a piece of furniture recently, and someone replied to it asking me if I wanted to sell home interior cr*p. No. I don’t. If you ever email me back, I’ll consider removing the block from your account. Thanks for playing.

Earlier this morning I fixed a bug that was preventing some people from editting their free ads. If you tried to edit an ad and encountered an error message stating that you were over your limit of free ads for that category, please see if it doesn’t just work now.

The paid ad / thumbnail / edit bug mentioned previously is patched, not fixed. If you change the picture in a paid ad, the thumbnail will revert back to a *pic* tag for a while, and then eventually it will change back to the thumbnail. Might take the better part of a day. I’ll fix it right soon.

More Categories

In the last week we’ve added a few more categories. ‘Halloween’ is temporary, just for the duration of the holiday. The automotive section was broken up into actual vehicles, and a new group for parts, with a ‘Car Audio’ and an ‘Automotive Tools’ categories added in for good measure. Paintballers and RC fanatics both have their own categories now. There seems to be a constant stream of those things, and not really a good place to put them until now. We also added a ‘Medical Equipment and Supplies’ category. Tech Support assures me that there is a demand for it.

I’m finally getting a few tomatoes out of the garden, just in time for frost around the corner. We’ve got a ‘Local Produce’ section for those who have a surplus, or those like me who came up short in the garden this year. It’s time to get things winterized now that the kids are back in school. Happy Birthday to my boy, he turned 9 this past week!

A relatively minor update to the way flagged ads are handled caused a few minutes of downtime this morning around 8:30 as I hammered some kinks out of the code. Now if you flag an ad it not only moves it a bit closer to being removed from the site, but it will also immediately remove it from the listing that _you_ see.

I put in a few more categories today. Some new stuff, some that was just splitting older categories into more manageable groups. I apologize to anyone who noticed that A little after 10 am I took down the site. It was only down about 3 minutes, so hopefully it didn’t inconvenience anyone too much.

Well I can’t sleep tonight, so I lose. But you win. I finished up a change to the classifieds. All categories may be posted to without charge. The premium categories have a low limit to the number of free ads that can be posted, other categories allow a few more ads for free. You can post as many paid, upgraded ads anywhere you like, and there is no longer a $1 charge per premium category.

Now that does leave me feeling that people who have paid their $1 for a premium category deserve a little something more. These are the people that are helping us stay in business and continue to provide this service to all. Temporarily the first page of each category will display paid ads first, free ads starting on the second page. Next week it will go back to normal.

Changes are a fact of life. Some of them are good, some not so good. In the last couple of days my I’ve seen a few not so good. Life moves on.

The classifieds has seen some changes as well. The most recent, today, was the removal of any upper cap to the number of ads posted, provided there was a payment with the ad. One of the recent changes that people tended not to like was the introduction of premium categories. God willing, tomorrow we will witness another change that should make folks happier. The concept of a premium category isn’t going to go away, but perhaps there is some happy middle ground where we can remain profitable and the folks using our site can still benefit fully.

Couple of small things today. I adjusted the asking price display so that the big ticket items show as $232,000.00 rather than $232000.00. From now on you only need to enter a zipcode, and we’ll work out the city, state from that. It should be a couple steps simpler to submit an ad, and in addition the location display becomes more consistent.
